A Three Fjord Odyssey

En route take in vast mountain plateaus; the Fjærland glacier; Lake Jølster and waterfalls by the score to a kaleidoscopic mix of fjord Norway’s most dramatic sights. Round off your trip with a day in Ålesund with its Art Nouveau old town replete with turnets, gargoyles, spires and medieval ornamentation.

DAY 1: UK – BERGEN

Scheduled SAS flight(s) Gatwick to Bergen. Self transfer to hotel. Overnight Hotel Rica.

DAY 2: BERGEN – LOFTHUS

Take the funicular for the view from Mount Fløyen; explore the winding streets of Old Bergen and perhaps choose your lunch at the Fish Market. Collect the car and drive to Lofthus on the Hardangerfjord (144 km). Two overnights at Hotel Ullensvang.

DAY 3: HARDANGERFJORD

At leisure. Walk the Heritage Trail in Sysehagen; see the saltmarsh bird life in Holmen; take a trip up the Orsafjord or cruise on the Hardangerfjord to Kinsarvik.

DAY 4: UTNE – VOSS

Drive up the mountain road past Skjervefoss waterfall to Voss (42 km). Overnight at Park Hotel for two nights.

DAY 5: VOSS

At leisure. Enjoy the dramatic Flåm Mountain Railway and cruise the Aurland and Nærøy Fjords.

DAY 6: VOSS – BALESTRAND

Drive to Balestrand (95 km + ferry). A journey of contrasts: across the Vik Mountains, down to Vik and Hopperstad Stave Church, by ferry across to Dragsvik and a short drive to Balestrand for two overnights at Midtnes Pension.

DAY 7: SOGNEFJORD

We think Balestrand is Norway’s ‘Jewel in the Crown’. If you can tear yourself away, visit the Fjærland Glacier or drive along to Solvorn and Urnes Stave Church.

DAY 8: BALESTRAND – LOEN

Drive to Loen (125 km). Through the Barddal Valley, then along by Lake Jølster and up alongside the Briksdal Glacier. Two overnights at Hotel Alexandra.

DAY 9: LOEN

A day of agonising choices. Drive up to the Geiranger Fjord and its spectacular waterfalls; take a trip to the Kjendal Glacier or to the Briksdal Glacier or visit Ålesund with its fascinating art nouveau buildings.

DAY 10: LOEN – ÅLESUND

Drive to Ålesund (162 km + ferry). For a bit of excitement between Hjelle and Sunnmøre you can drive through the Sunnmøre mountains and take the so called “shelf road”. En route you can take in the Isflamannen the “saluting” mountain that spouts hot water in late summer. Overnight at Hotel Brosundet for 2 nights.

DAY 11: Day at leisure in this one of Europe’s best examples of Art Nouveau architecture.

DAY 12: Morning at leisure before flight back to the UK.
