Circumnavigate the island for a surfeit of ‘wow’ factor sights and dramatically contrasting scenery ranging from black sand beaches, eerily misty fjords, steaming fumaroles to lush green moorland, fertile glacier plains and waterfalls.
DAY 1: UK – REYKJAVÍK
Scheduled flight to Reykjavík. Collect hire car, drive to and overnight at Hótel Cabin.
DAY 2: THE SOUTH COAST
Scenic Highlights: Pingvellir National Park: Viking Parliament: Geysir: Strokkur: Gullfoss: Seljavellir: Skógar Folk Museum. Overnight at Dyrhólaey Hotel.
DAY 3: THE SOUTHEAST COAST
Drive along the southeast coast with bridges fjording several dramatic outwash plains interspersed with black sand beaches. Overnight at Litla-Hof Farmhouse Hotel for 2 nights.
DAY 4: SKAFTAFELL AREA
Scenic Highlights: Skaftafell National Park: Vatnajökull.
DAY 5: EAST COAST FJORDS
Scenic Highlights: Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon: East Fjords and fishing villages. Overnight at Guesthouse Egilssta∂ir.
DAY 6: EGILSSTAIIR-MYVATN
Overnight at Vogarfarm Guesthouse for 2 nights.
DAY 7: LAKE MYVATN AREA
Time to explore the extraordinary scenery and wildlife in the area: the wooded headland at Höfði with its lava pillars; contorted black towers of Dimmuborgir; the pastel coloured Námafjall ridge with its steamy surroundings and smouldering, sulphurous Krafla.
DAY 8: AKUREYRI AND THE NORTH
Scenic Highlights: Akureyri: Skagafjör∂ur: Glaumbær Turf Farm/Folk Museum: Ví∂im∞ri: Vatnsdalshólar. Overnight at Gauksmyri Farm Hotel.
DAY 9: THE NORTHWEST
Scenic Highlights: Borgarfjör∂ur: Grábók Crater: Borgarnes Activity option: Guided Saga Tour. Overnight at Hótel Cabin or similar.
DAY 10: REYKJAVÍK-UK
Morning at leisure. Transfer to Keflavík Airport. Scheduled return flight to UK.
Our opinion
There are those who suggest that you can get round Iceland in as little as 5 or 6 days which, with the ring road coming at 1400 kilometres, you theoretically can but whether you'd want to, see anything along the way or feel as though you'd had a holiday afterwards is questionable. We think you need a week to enjoy yourself and that's what this tour is designed to do.
As with all our self drives the trip is customizable in any way that suits you - we can add a night here, take away one there and, of course, your car can be upgraded to any level of comfort and power you need.
