The Røras Railway – A Train to Trondheim

The Røros Railway first opened to the public in 1877 connecting Oslo in the South of Norway with Trondheim in the North. The 383 km track passes through some of Norway’s most picturesque landscapes and links centuries of history. This is a cultural journey that can be enjoyed year-round and winter casts a magical spell over the capital Oslo, the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Røros (inspiration for the Disney film ‘Frozen’) as well as Trondheim, the celebrated capital of the Vikings.

DAY 1 To Oslo
Fly to Gardermoen Airport, Oslo where the airport express train transports you into the capital within 20 minutes. Our recommended hotel is just a 5 minute walk from the central station. Check-in and familiarise yourself with the surroundings. A complimentary light buffet supper is served between 18.00 to 21.00.
DAY 2 Day at Leisure in Oslo
Enjoy a typical Scandinavian buffet breakfast before heading out into the city to explore. Oslo has over 50 museums, including the world’s largest collection of artwork by Munch and three that pay tribute to Norway’s maritime history. The futuristic waterfront Opera House sits at the entrance to Aker Brygge and its cosmopolitan collection of bars and restaurants. For something a little more historical, follow in the footsteps of Grieg and Ibsen by dining at their favourite Engebret Café, or head to the Vigeland Park, a dedication to Gustav Vigeland and over 121 of his sculptures.
DAY 3 Rørosbanen to Røros
Make the most of your day and take the early morning train to Røros. First opened to the public in 1877, this line was the first to link the capitals past and present. Departing just after 08.30 and after changing at Hamar, you will observe the changing landscape as you follow the Glomma River through one of the largest wilderness areas in Scandinavia. The 5-hour journey is peppered with many charming old stations, now considered to be architectural gems as well as vast forests, which are home to the magnificent Norwegian Elk. Arrive in Røros in time for check-in. Our recommended hotel is the Erzscheidergården Hotel, a member of De Historiske Hotels and perfectly complements this celebrated town.  Wrap up warm (Røros is one of the coldest places in Norway) before exploring this charming picture postcard town, awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1980. Originally established as a result of the copper industry, the 17th and 18th century wooden houses that line the streets, are still lived in and utilized today. Travel in winter and the snow transforms Røros into a picture perfect winter scene, which was an inspiration for the Disney film ‘Frozen’. Restaurants in Røros pride themselves on locally sourced and produced menus, and there are plenty to choose from for your evening meal.
DAY 4 To Trondheim
The onward train to Trondheim does not leave until just after 15.30, so there is plenty of time to further explore Røros, which during the winter snows, has a permanent festive feel. Be sure to visit the church, which is Norway’s 5th largest. Once on the train, it is a scenic 2½ journey towards the coastal town of Trondheim. On arrival head to your chosen hotel. We recommend the Scandic Hotel Nidelven, winner of Norway’s best breakfast and conveniently located near the train station and city centre. Venture out into the city for dinner. Trondheim prides itself on the range of Nordic cuisine on offer and there is something to suit every palate. Mathallen is a delight and for whom locally sourced products are a speciality, but the choice is infinite.
DAY 5 Trondheim at leisure
Today is free for you to explore Trondheim at your leisure. Norway’s former Viking capital is home to over 1,000 years of history, which oozes from every pore. You can only wonder at Nidaros, the world’s northernmost Medieval Cathedral. Construction started in 1070, over the burial site of Saint Olav and it has been a pilgrimage route ever since. Walk through Bakklandet, a charming district of colourful wooden houses and wharf and home to some of Trondheim’s vibrant café culture. It is also boasts the world’s only bike lift.
Dine at leisure.
DAY 6 UK
Enjoy breakfast and perhaps squeeze in some last minute sightseeing or shopping, before heading to the airport in time for your return flight home.

There are ample opportunities to extend your stay in Norway. Travel further north and cross the Arctic Circle on the Nordlandsbanen train to Bodø, or board Hurtigruten for a costal Voyage north to Tromsø, the self-styled Capital of the Northern Lights, or head south towards Bergen. Please discuss your options with our expert travel consultants.
