The Longest Of The 8 Bridges That Make Up The Atlantic Road

Alesund, Geiranger and the Atlantic Road

The journey is as spectacular as the destination, on this impressive self-drive break. Enjoy Art Nouveau Ålesund and the exquisite scenery surrounding Geriangerfjord. Drive two designated National Tourist Routes. Wind your way along the dramatic Trollstigen road to Andalsnes, then hug the ocean’s edge on the Atlantic Road. A stay in Molde with its backdrop of 222 snow topped mountain peaks forms a fitting finale to this dazzling journey.

DAY 1 Ålesund

Fly to Ålesund. Self-transfer to the Hotel Brosundet for 2 nights.

DAY 2 Day at Leisure

Today is free for you to enjoy the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund. Meander through the charming narrow streets, where the colourful buildings are adorned with turrets and spires. Walk up the 418 steps to the top of Mount Aksla for unforgettable panoramic views of the town and coast. Alternatively, a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus or tourist train can be a more leisurely way to see the highlights of this historic town.

DAY 3 Geiranger

After breakfast, check-out, collect your hire car and head for Geiranger via the E60. At Hellesylt board the car ferry to Geiranger. This hour long journey takes you into the heart of the fjord, passing sheer mountain cliffs and tumbling waterfalls along the way. Disembark in Geiranger and check-in to the Union Hotel for 2 nights.  Soak up the surrounds before dinner this evening.

DAY 4 Geiranger

Today is at leisure and free for you to enjoy this remarkable location. Head to Flydalsjuvet for one of Norway’s most iconic views. There are countless walks and view-points to enjoy. Dinner is once again taken at the Hotel Union.

DAY 5 Andalsnes

Follow the ‘Golden Route’ to Andalsnes. Leave Geiranger via Eagles Road. 11 hairpin bends take you to 1920 ft above sea level. On the last turn, there is spectacular vantage point. From here you can see Dalsnibba, Geiranger, the fjord, as well as the Seven Sisters waterfall.

Continue to Eidsdal where a short ferry journey to Linge takes you to the village of Valldall. From here it is approx 30 km to the Trollstigen plateau. Half way along you pass Gudbrandsjuvet, a turbulent stretch of the Valldøla River. Here you will find a specially constructed platform for yet another fantastic viewing experience.

The last stage of the journey takes you to Trollstigen. This is without doubt Norway’s most famous mountain road and one of the world’s most spectacular and nerve-wrecking drives! Hold your breath whilst winding your way through the steep mountainside. Continue on to Andalsnes for an overnight stay at the cosy Aak B&B Hotel and from where you can enjoy the towering vertical rock face of ‘Trollvegen’ and the Rauma Railway.

DAY 6 Molde

Head back towards the ocean to Molde, with its backdrop of 222 snow topped mountain peaks. Spend 2 nights at the Hotell Molde Fjordstuer, which overlooks the ocean.

DAY 7 The Atlantic Highway

Today you will explore the Atlantic Road, a 36km stretch of road that sweeps along the coastline from Kårvåg to the tiny town of Bud. The road is a visual delight, linking tiny islands along the coast by way of seven bridges, which swoop and dip along the shore. The weather can add a dramatic element to the drive, exposing you to the full force of mother-nature if driving on a stormy day. Return to Molde for your final evening.

DAY 8 UK

The direct flight to London Gatwick departs at 15:50 so there is plenty of time to enjoy the 2 hour drive back to Ålesund before dropping off your hire car in good time for your flight home.

Please note: Some roads featured in this itinerary close during winter and only re-open from May onwards dependent on snow cover. Road tolls are additional and will be debited to the credit card you present at the time of rental.

Hotel Brosundet Alesund Norway
Hotel Brosundet

A little imagination and you will sense history when you gaze out the windows of Hotel Brosundet. 100 years ago the person leaning out these windows would have been someone waiting for a fishing-boat to deliver its catch. The old Art Nouveau warehouse is now transformed into a tasteful hotel. Our hotel is a retreat for your stay in Aalesund. Hotel Brosundet is small and intimate with only 47 rooms.
