Midnight Sun Express and ICEHOTEL 365

This show-stopping journey transports you from Tromsø in Northern Norway, across the vast tundra and mountain plateaus to Narvik, where you board The Arctic Train to Kiruna in Sweden. The tour ends with a spectacular stay at the ICEHOTEL, which is now open 365 days of the year. Experience the Midnight Sun phenomena and wonders of 24-hour daylight, extraordinary summer scenery, whilst staying in the ultimate winter accommodation!

.

DAY 1 Tromsø
Fly to Tromsø and transfer with ‘Flybuss’ to the Clarion Collection Hotel With for 2 nights. Being above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø enjoys 24-hour daylight from mid-May to mid-July, the sun then barely dips below the horizon until the end of August. September sees a shortening day but no less dramatic given the warm autumnal colours and even the chance of the Northern Lights. The long summer days will give you ample opportunity to immediately start your adventure.
DAY 2 Tromsø
Tailor-make your stay in the ‘Capital of the North’ from our selection of optional excursions. The profusion of wildlife makes a sea safari appealing, or try a Nordic Husky hike. The surrounding islands are a playground for cyclists, photographers and kayakers, whereas museums, Sami experiences and Midnight Sun concerts in the Arctic Cathedral lead the cultural charge. We have a wealth of excursions on offer.
DAY 3 Narvik
Enjoy breakfast before taking the early morning bus south to Narvik (payable locally). The scenic 4-hour journey meanders through the glacial valleys and fjords of the Troms region. On arrival in Narvik, check-in to the Scandic Narvik and sample its designer delights. The rest of the day is at leisure. We recommend the Ofoten Museum, which chronicles the construction of the railway and the WWII battles that took place for the control of both Narvik’s harbour and all important iron ore. Alternatively, take the cable car to the top of Narvikfjellet for panoramic views of Ofotfjord. Fine dining can be enjoyed at the Linken Restaurant.
DAY 4 The Arctic Train & ICEHOTEL 365
Board the Ofoten Line and Arctic Circle train for one of the most northern railway journeys in the world. The 3-hour journey initially hugs the shores of the Ofotfjord before ascending to its highest point at the border crossing of Riksangransen. There are no customs as you continue onwards crossing Abisko National Park before arriving at the former mining town of Kiruna. On arrival you will be met and transferred to the ICEHOTEL. Your accommodation for the night is a bed of ice, covered with reindeer skins topped with the warmest of sleeping bags. A whole host of activities await but first raise a toast to your journey in the ICEBAR whilst appreciating the fine ice carvings hewn by award-winning ice artists. Optional summer activities include: ice-sculpting, cycling, canoeing, stand-up paddling and fishing – or simply enjoying the silence of the wilderness in all its glory. Activities on offer do depend on the season you choose to travel. Please check with your consultant as to the options on offer.
DAY 5 UK
Enjoy a warming hot berry juice and rejuvenating sauna before breakfast. Afterwards you will transfer to Kiruna Airport in time for your flight home to the UK (via Stockholm).

ICEHOTEL 365, Kiruna

From November 2016, you can experience the ICEHOTEL 365 days a year. Rather than allowing the ICEHOTEL to slowly melt each spring, a new concept has been created allowing you to spend a night in a hand-sculpted suite made of ice, at any time of the year. Using solar panels to harness the near constant daylight between April and September, this environmentally friendly project hopes to showcase the Arctic and its seasons year round. Enjoy everything from the midnight sun to the autumnal colours of September and the first wisps of the Aurora returning.

Outside the winter months, the ICEHOTEL 365 will have 22 deluxe and art suites housed in a permanent turf covered roof, topped with Arctic mountain flowers and grasses. The inner walls of this construction will be covered in ice, and as befitting its original concept, the inside will be adorned with pillars and sculptures crafted by ice artists from all over the world. The suites themselves will be at a constant -5°c, in order to maintain the exquisite sculptures and reindeer skin covered ice-bed that you will be sleeping on. A welcome new addition will be an adjoining heated en-suite bathroom. When winter arrives the traditional ICEHOTEL will be added, housing further ice rooms and suites.
