At Home With The Huskies

Join in this 5-day husky adventure, which introduces you to one on of the oldest forms of transport in the Arctic and cements that special bond that exists between a human and his dog. During this extra-ordinary undertaking, you’ll travel through the Lappish winter wilderness, overnighting in wilderness cabins, whilst mushing and tending your very own team of huskies. A more authentic Arctic activity is hard to find and impossible to beat.

DAY 1 Kittila
Fly to Kittila, in the heart of Finnish Lapland where, on arrival you will be met by your guide and make the short 1-hour transfer to Muonio, and your Safari House accommodation for the night, before enjoying a welcome dinner with your fellow adventurers.

DAY 2 Husky Introduction and Discovering the Wilderness

After breakfast, you will all receive an introduction to the programme for the week and furnish yourselves with the equipment necessary for your adventure, including outer thermal protective winter clothing. It is then time to meet Harriniva’s 400-strong pack of lovingly reared huskies, all with their own names and distinctive characters.

As you are introduced to your own dog team, they howl with anticipation, but require a little more patience as you are taught how to handle the dogs and sled. Preparation complete, it is time to release the rope that tethers the sled. As the dogs leap into action, the cacophony of noise is replaced with a steady pant, as they concentrate on the job in hand. And, as you relax into their rhythm, you can but compare yourself to an intrepid Arctic explorer, for whom this was (and still is) their favoured form of transport.

A rest and wilderness lunch is taken en route, before arriving at the wilderness cabin and your accommodation for the night. Teamwork is the order of the day, as you and your fellow travellers unharness and tend to the huskies, as well as light the wood fired stove and prepare dinner. The evening is spent cocooned in this convivial and cosy atmosphere that is typical of many a Scandinavian winter weekend break.

DAY 3 – 5 The Husky Adventure Continues
A pattern starts to emerge over the following few days. A hearty breakfast is followed by preparing your sled and team of huskies for the day’s foray into the Arctic wilderness. Just like your human companions, you will be able to identify the huskies different personalities and know which ones are eager for the trail and which may prefer to sleep a little longer. However, once out in the stunning nature, you are as one as you fly through the beautiful forested scenery, over frozen lakes and traverse alongside frozen rivers.

Lunch is always taken en-route and over an open fire, with simple yet delicious wilderness dinners prepared on arrival at your cabin. Accommodation is in a different wilderness hut each night, but where you can be assured of a comfortable bed and a warming sauna to relieve any residual muscle aches and pains.

Should the conditions be right, you may even be rewarded with a dancing display of the Northern Lights overhead and with being out in the wilderness, with no light pollution, the experience will only be that more intense.

DAY 6 A return to Harriniva
As you savour your last day, you will return to Harriniva having undertaken an adventure that will have put modern day distractions into perspective. We are sure that there will be a measure of gratitude as you say good-bye to your faithful four-legged friends and share a final evening reminiscing over dinner with your fellow travellers over the adventure that you have just had.

DAY 7 UK
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a last chance to breathe in the pure, clean air before taking the transfer back to Kittila airport in time for your return flight back home.
