Husky Mushing & The IceHotel

Mush your own team of pedigree huskies through the sparkling white vistas of the Tornedalen valley; swoosh past pine & birch forests, across frozen lakes and through reindeer pastures. Stay overnight in traditional log cabins; eat around open fires; discover the soothing, soporific warmth of a logwood sauna and, if you fancy, finish off with a night in the world famous ICEHOTEL.

Mushing teams of Alaskan or Siberian huskies is one of the oldest ways of travelling in the Arctic and on this tour you will learn to both care for and drive your own dog team, as well as picking up the tracks of moose, reindeer and fox. Overnight accommodation is in traditional log cabins with bunk beds. Above all this is a shared intimate experience - group size is never more than 6. Johan Vaisanen & Sara Ljunggren are an item, showing passion about nature as well as for each other. Born in Kangos on the Lainiojoki riverbank, Johanlearnt to mush in Alaska where he lived in remote splendour for a year before returning home to work with his own huskies. Sara grew up in Gota (population 500), found it too urban and joined Johan in Kangos (population 300). Between them, they can ride, ski, kayak, canoe, fish, climb, mountain bike and of course mush, so you couldn’t be in better hands.

DAY 1 UK – KANGOS
Scheduled SAS flights to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland via Stockholm. Private transfer with lunch en route to Kangos where you meet up with your guide/hosts. Briefing around an open fire and when you feel comfortable about things, harness up and mush away into the wilderness. Dinner and overnight in a log cabin.
DAY 2 MUSHING
Start the day by checking on the dogs, helping with their breakfast and over yours, discussing the trails lying before you. Harness up and mush for 2 to 3 hours with lunch in the wild before continuing to your next overnight cabin. Supper and overnight.
DAY 3 MUSHING
With the experience of the last two days under your belt, today’s mush will feel as relaxed as that magic moment when learning to drive a car your foot depressed the clutch without thinking about it. After soup round an open fire you trail through reindeer feeding grounds before reaching your next cabin. Sauna, supper and overnight.
DAY 4 KANGOS – UK
Short mush back to Kangos and the dog kennels before private transfer to the airport and return flight to the UK OR to the ICEHOTEL for a final night in a snow room, leaving for home the following day. (See page 14)
