OUR TOURS'Lord of the Ring' is pretty much what you feel like following Iceland's paved ring road circumscribing the island. Dubbed road 1 (there isn't a number 2!) it's about 1400 km long with lesser roads leeching off it, either down to coastal villages or inland to farming hamlets. You can get round it in around week without having to drive like a Schumacher, although if you have the time, obviously the longer you can take, the more time you have for detours and excursions such as whale spotting, glacier snowmobiling and so forth. However, many of Iceland's most scenic attractions lie in an arc stretching anti-clockwise from the Southwest to the Northeast, so as well as circumnavigational tours we have several showcasing these from a single location or travelling round to Myvatn and ending in Akureyri. In thinking about your trip length remember that only around half of Iceland’s roads are paved, many of them being surfaced with gravel on which you need to allow for driving at lower speeds because of the danger from windscreen breaking pebbles flying up from oncoming vehicles. |

On what are known as F roads you may have to slow down to a crawl for lengthy spells, as these are little more than tracks invariably with stretches of sand, mud, crushed rock and frequently forded with river or melt water. The F26 (Sprengisandur) and the F35 (Kjölur) are the two main highland ones and only open towards the end of June for about a couple of months. |
