‘The Northern Lights’ or ‘Aurora Borealis’, to give them their proper name, are a natural phenomenon, totally unpredictable but a magnificent spectacle when atmospheric conditions are just right.
And it was from an observatory, just North of Tromso, the Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland gave the world the first scientific explanation for the Aurora. He observed how electron rays from the sun collided with the earth’s magnetic field and followed it down to the magnetic poles creating an explosion of light.
Visible from November to April, Tromso is one of the world’s best spots from which to see the lights as well as being a city in which to enjoy yourself.
We can’t guarantee you’ll see the Northern Lights (no-one can) but we can promise the best chance possible - and numerous excursion options to make your trip one to remember.
