Explore Oslo, the Viking capital, before driving up along Norway’s mountain spine to Dombås on the edge of Dovrefjell , a habitat for protected flora and fauna that some botanists believe to have survived the Ice Age; continue on to Ålesund, one of Europe’s finest examples of art nouveau architecture before driving South alongside lakes and across fjords, staying overnight at some of Norway’s finest fjord hotels before ending up in the Hanseatic port of Bergen with clapboard houses, fish markets and an indelible maritime atmosphere.

DAY 1: UK-OSLO

Scheduled SAS flight(s) to Oslo. Self transfer by rail to city centre and overnight at Hotel Oslo for 2 nights.

DAY 2: OSLO

Explore Norway’s Viking Capital: the Vigeland Sculpture Park, Viking Ship Museum and Akersus without rushing it.

DAY 3: OSLO-DOMBÅS

Collect your hire car and take the E6 out of Oslo, up alongside Lake Mjosa stopping for a bite to eat in Lillehammer and then on to Dombås. Overnight at Hotel Dombås.

DAY 4: DOMBÅS-ÅLESUND 

Follow the E136 on the south side of the Dovre national park, home to musk oxen and reindeer, to Åndalsnes at the head of the Romsdalsfjorden and along the fjord’s edge before turning down on the E9 to Ålesund. Overnight at Hotel Brosundet for 2 nights.

DAY 5: ÅLESUND

Explore the old town with its unique collection of art nouveau houses dating from the beginning of the 19th century when young Norwegian architects re-designed the city in Art Nouveau style: ornamentatory fairytales spires, towers and Gaudi like swirls at every turn.

DAY 6:  ÅLESUND-LOEN

Drive from Alesund to Loen. Overnight at Hotel Alexandra for 2 nights. Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 7: LOEN

At leisure. Enjoy the tranquillity of Lake Loen. Visit Nicolai Astrup’s home or take a trip to the Briksdal Glacier at the end of the Olden Valley.

DAY 8: LOEN –BALESTRAND

Drive to Moskog and over the mountains for the serpentine descent to Dragsvik and round to Balestrand (75 km). Overnight at the renowned Kviknes Hotel. Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 9: BALESTRAND-BERGEN

Drive to Bergen (216 km + ferry) along the northern shore of the Sognefjord to Lavik for the ferry at Oppedal and onward to Bergen. Final night at Hotel Neptun.

DAY 10: BERGEN-UK

Return hire car before return flight to UK.
