The Jostedals Glacier

Images of Norway

Explore the Hanseatic delights of Bergen; discover Oslo with its extraordinary Vigeland sculpture park; cruise on the world’s longest fjord and through Western Norway’s archipelago; stop off at old working farms for a glimpse of Norwegian life and take in the extraordinary Flåm mountain railway.

A highlight of this arrangement is a trip along the Fjaerlandsfjord, which leeches off the Sognefjord and at whose head is the Jostedalsbreen glacier, the longest glacier in Continental Europe. Apart from their sheer awesomeness glaciers are visible barometers of climate change with the finger glaciers behaving individually and idiosyncratically: Nigardsbreen is virtually unaffected whilst other glacier arms are melting away. The Norwegian Glacier Museum is a superb example of what a museum should be with a multi screen film presentation of the glacier filmed from a helicopter and exhibits showing a glacier to be much more than a blob of ice.
