New Year By Lake Inari

The kaleidoscopic mix of cultures in Nellim with its Inari, Skolt and Northern Sami roots and the possibility of the Northern Lights swirling around over the pine forest, make a New Year here something of a culinary & festive riot.

DEC 29 UK – LAPLAND
Depart Heathrow at 10.20 on Finnair scheduled flight(s) to Ivalo via Helsinki. Arrive 17.35 local time and transfer to Nellim. Check into your room and enjoy a leisurely dinner.
DEC 30 HUSKY SAFARI
Today you will meet the pack of Alaskan huskies whose kennels in the forest are just a short walk from the hotel and whose excited barking slowly magnifies as you approach them. Adults mush their own team of dogs and as the dogs pull you along a snow-carpeted trail the silence is broken only by the whooshing sound of slicing sleigh runners. Lunch at hotel. Later spend an afternoon of games in the snow on the sloping bank running down to the lake with snow shoeing, tobogganing and ice fishing. Dinner at the hotel.
NEW YEAR’S EVE
After breakfast, climb aboard your snowmobile for a safari through the pine forests surrounding Lake Inari and lunch washed down with hot berry juice. New Year’s Eve is celebrated quietly with a simple menu of local produce. As the evening wears on there will be a small celebration with music, fireworks and fortunes told from the shapes formed by melting tin.
NEW YEAR’S DAY
Leisurely, late breakfast before a visit to a nearby reindeer corral to meet a herder along with his herd. In the evening take a snowmobile out to a special spot by Lake Inari to stake out the Northern Lights for perhaps one of nature’s dazzling light shows to end your stay.
JAN 2 LAPLAND – UK
Breakfast and time for a last toboggan before transfer to Ivalo and return flight(s) via Helsinki to Heathrow, taking off after lunch and arriving early evening.
Wilderness Hotel Nellim
Wilderness Hotel Nellim

The Wilderness Hotel Nellim is owned and run by the Lappalainen family: Jouko and Mari. Here they have converted the old school house into a home for travellers looking for adventure and tranquility. The hotel consists of 3 buildings facing in on each other around what was once the children’s playground:  there are 20 hotel rooms, 6 cosy apartments and two new log cabins all with private WC/shower; fresh food from the lake or forests and an authentic Sami family welcome characterise the hotel.

The hotel’s principle public area has a small lounge seating area, restaurant and bar, hand crafted by Jouko himself.
